Our new cholesterol training package of materials and resources has two primary aims:
- To deliver clinicians the information they need in a format that suits them to improve appropriate prescribing for statin eligible high-risk patients
- To provide patients indicated for statins with easily understandable information that helps them realize the benefit of statin therapy while dispelling concerns or myths that may be barriers to using them
Results of a questionnaire of clinicians and staff indicated several specific gaps and preferences that informed this latest package of cholesterol education materials. Needs identified included:
- Packaging key aspects of the current 2018 Cholesterol Guideline into a variety of clear and actionable formats
- Clarifying the role of healthy lifestyle activities vs. statin therapy in high-risk patients
- Tools to help care teams engage in effective conversations with patients about statins
- Tools to help care teams address medication adherence and medication access barriers
- Patient education resources in different formats (e.g., print and media) that are low literacy level and available in Spanish
To date, the Cholesterol Provider Training Package includes:
- Short, annotated slide decks (for self-paced learning or easy training delivery):
- Statin Guideline Snapshot (also available as a recorded webinar/podcast)
