Burnout is a commonly-used phrase in healthcare–driving care team members to literally turn away from patients and have less joy and less effectiveness in their work. The EHR is often identified as the culprit– where activities of data entry overwhelm what would be a typical workflow, interrupting care activities, separating or hiding important data which should be viewed at the time of decision-making, and adding many steps which themselves add no value to the care process.
Evaluating usability and implementing human-centered design principles can improve reimbursement, care team satisfaction, data quality, and reduce staff time spent on clinical tasks.
Here we also describe how engaging vendor partners in user-centered improvements can improve the vendor-customer relationship and the care team experience.
